Skullcandy PLYR Wireless vs Aviator 900 ANC: Gaming Headset or Everyday Headphones?

Quick Answer

If you're a dedicated gamer who wants immersive spatial audio and a dedicated gaming mic, the Skullcandy PLYR Wireless is your best bet. If you need versatile headphones for daily commutes, calls, and music with active noise cancellation, the Aviator 900 ANC is the smarter choice. Choose based on your primary use case.

Choosing between a dedicated gaming headset and premium ANC headphones can be tough, especially when both come from a brand you trust like Skullcandy. The PLYR Wireless is engineered for gamers, while the Aviator 900 ANC targets everyday listeners who want noise cancellation and high-quality audio. In this comparison, we break down the key differences to help you decide which one fits your lifestyle.

Design and Comfort

The PLYR Wireless is built for long gaming sessions, with a focus on comfort and functionality. It features a flip-to-mute microphone and intuitive on-ear controls, making it easy to communicate with teammates without fumbling. The headset's design is gamer-centric, with a sturdy build and plush ear cushions that reduce fatigue during marathon play.

On the other hand, the Aviator 900 ANC is designed for all-day wear, whether you're commuting, working, or relaxing. Its sleek, foldable design makes it portable, and the ear cups are crafted for maximum comfort over extended periods. The Aviator also includes active noise cancellation, which is a boon for blocking out ambient noise in busy environments.

• PLYR Wireless: flip-to-mute mic, on-ear controls, gamer-focused design.
• Aviator 900 ANC: foldable, portable, ANC for immersive listening.

Audio Performance and Features

When it comes to audio, the PLYR Wireless shines with THX Spatial Audio, providing a 360-degree soundscape that helps you pinpoint enemy footsteps and immerse yourself in the game. It also features Crusher Bass, which delivers a tactile bass response that makes explosions and impacts feel real. This is a headset that truly brings games to life.

The Aviator 900 ANC, while not a gaming headset, offers excellent audio quality for music and media. It includes active noise cancellation to isolate you from distractions, and its sound signature is balanced, making it versatile for various genres. However, it lacks the spatial audio and gamer-specific features like a dedicated game/chat mix.

• PLYR Wireless: THX Spatial Audio, Crusher Bass, game/chat mix.
• Aviator 900 ANC: ANC, balanced sound, ideal for music and calls.

Battery Life and Connectivity

Battery life is crucial for both gaming and daily use. The PLYR Wireless offers a solid battery life that can last through long gaming sessions, and it charges via USB-C for quick top-ups. Connectivity is reliable with a wireless dongle, ensuring low latency for competitive play.

The Aviator 900 ANC also provides good battery life, with ANC enabled, and supports Bluetooth multipoint, allowing you to switch between devices seamlessly. This makes it a great companion for those who juggle a phone, laptop, and tablet throughout the day.

• PLYR Wireless: USB-C charging, wireless dongle for low latency.
• Aviator 900 ANC: Bluetooth multipoint, good battery with ANC.

Trade-offs to Consider

• Gaming Features vs. Everyday Versatility: PLYR Wireless offers THX Spatial Audio and Crusher Bass for an immersive gaming experience, but Aviator 900 ANC provides ANC and a balanced sound for all-around use. If gaming is your priority, choose PLYR; if you need a do-it-all headphone, go with Aviator.
• Microphone Quality: PLYR Wireless has a dedicated gaming mic with flip-to-mute, while Aviator 900 ANC has a built-in mic for calls but not optimized for gaming. For team chat, PLYR is superior; for casual calls, Aviator suffices.
• Portability: Aviator 900 ANC is foldable and more portable, while PLYR Wireless is bulkier and designed for desk use. If you travel often, Aviator is easier to carry.
